About
Mia Gjakonovski (*1999) is a Berlin-based independent artist working between alternative pop and jazz. Her music is melancholic and understated, carried by a warm alto voice and lyrics that are personal, reflective, and closely connected to her own experiences.
After performing in various band projects and spending two years with the German National Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO), she completed a degree in jazz performance at the Jazz Institute Berlin. The musical complexity she encountered there continues to inform her work- not in an overt or technical way, but in subtle harmonic shifts, phrasing, and attention to detail that quietly shape her sound.
Choosing alternative pop as her primary medium was a conscious move toward clarity and directness. She is drawn to reduction rather than density: simple structures that allow space for nuance. Within that simplicity, traces of her jazz background surface naturally and almost incidentally. Most of her songs take shape during the recording process itself. Without a fixed plan, she sits down in her small home studio, presses record, and begins to play- trying out melodies and lyrics as they come to her in the moment. The music develops organically from these sessions, shaped by atmosphere, instinct, and a focused, comfortable working environment.
Her single 'when did you know', the first release from her solo EP, reflects this approach. She wrote the song, recorded all instruments herself, and produced it independently, maintaining a hands-on and self-contained creative process.
Mia Gjakonovski's work values subtlety and honesty, leaving room for listeners to connect with the music in their own way.
